I have a 1988 5.7 Liter OMC Cobra I/O. I went to check my outdrive today and noticed oil coming out of my lower unit where the prop is and where the water sucking holes are. I checked the dip stick on my outdrive and the gear oil did not register on the stick. I raised the outdrive and the oil started to flow at a quicker pace. Can anybody tell me what the prblem is and how much it is going to cost me?

I recently had some work done to the outdrive but i have not used the boat nor have a noticed this leak until today. In additon, after I received my boat back after the work I had done to it (had gears replaced and outdrive put back on) I have noticed that the outdrive shutters when i move the steering wheel back and forth? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: OMC Gear Oil Leak

You better get with the shop that repaired it, sounds like they damaged a o-ring or seal reassembling it and someone for got to pressure test it on completion---Bob

Re: OMC Gear Oil Leak

the power steering actuator needs a bit of grease this usually fixes steering shutter.
have shop test out drive for leaks but one possibility is they used oil to lubricate impeller and what your seeing is just excess oil leaking out of water intake screen.
cobra outdrives must be filled from the middle drain screw not from the bottom screw i'm sure your shop knows that but if you are refilling drive its important.if drive is filled from the bottom they last about 1/2 hour

I agree with Laddie, there are seals in the upper and lower unit that may have been damaged or missed during the rebuild. Had they pressure checked it after the rebuild they would have found the leak.
Contact the ones that did the work. They should fix it for you for free.
Can't give an estimate to fix it, unless you know what the problem is.
