OMC Horsepower

I seem to recall hearing that on the old OMC outboards they measured the hp rating at the crankshaft and not at the prop like other manufacturers did and thus had lower prop hp's than competing manufacturers for a similar rated outboard. Is this correct and if so how much lower is it and what year did they change over to the prop rated system? thx, Steve

Prior to about 1985 all makes measured HP at the crank.

Over about a 3 year period all makes switched to measuring HP at the prop.

Though what you "heard" might have been true briefly in particular cases, it is not true in general.
