I looked at a early to mid 70's Starcraft Boat yesterday it appears to have an OMC Out Drive and a Chevy 4 Cyl ??

The Out drive was removed I assume it has problems

Can anyone tell me What Engine this might Be??

Also is this something I should Stay away From??

stay away from it.... expect to pay $3000 to $4000 for a properly rebuilt electric shift outdrive and it still won't be as reliable as a Merc, Volvo or even later mechanical shift OMC.

Depends. Do you have lots of spare time and need something to thin out that nasty bulging bank account?

I think my 69 omc I/O is fantastic ive had mine since 1998 all they need is some TLC, and drop the gear oil alot. i find you have just as much trouble with any old boat electic shift or mechanical read the fourum, i have replaced water pump tilt cyliniods tilt motor engine belt fuel pump distributor points cap rotor wires, plugs yearly oil change yearly, fuel tank, fuel filters,
pulled my tilt motor 3 times, got that down to a science, i have never had water in engine oil or cylindars, my baby starts on the firt crank all the time, as long as im getting fuel im moving i never had a tow in 8 years although i did go 2 miles in reverse, even with a slipping hub i can move, my boat is clen and ship shape, and i get some really weird looks and compliments from those who know and understand that boating is a lot fo f___ing work.
p.s. no one will touch your boat with a 10 foot barge pole if you need someone to work on it!

Hey 69 (my favorite # lol) Looks like your boat is similar size/hull as mine! Mine's a '75. What drive package you got? After hearing alot of bad things about stringers when I first got mine, I found they aren't all that bad! I've been able to do everything on mine myself so far (see my other threads) just need a little perserverance when finding parts. The only thing I haven't done is tear into the leg, as I haven't had to. That part makes me a little nervous, but only because I've never worked on ANY outdrives before!:%d:)
