I have a OMC 3.0 that had a cracked block. I purchased a long block then swapped everything else over to the new block. I have it installed but now have no spark. The ignition worked fine before I swapped it over to the new block. It turns over fine, There is power to the coil. The cap, rotor, points, condenser leads and plugs are all in good shape. Does anyone have any tips or a good troubleshooting link for this type of ignition. Or Wiring diagram.
Thanks for any help.

Have you checked to make sure the point gap is set correctly?
Are you sure the points are ok. Old points get glazed over while sitting and doing nothing and will not make connection when closed. aka NO SPARK.

Re: Omc Ignition Troubleshooting Help

I took the points to the auto parts store they told me they were in perfect shape, and looked almost new, not necessary to replace. Before removing them I did not move them just swapped the entire distributor. When I re installed them I put them back exactly in the same spot. How do I set the points ? There are 3 wires on the negative post on the coil -a black wire connected to the distributor and two gray wires. Should I be tracing where the gray wire go, could they be causing me any issues.

You can take the two grey wires off and try it. Not sure which OMC you have but one would be the ESA and the other is the tach. You need to set the points properly. You can gap them initially but should then set them with a dwell meter.

Re: Omc Ignition Troubleshooting Help

You swapped the distributor, did you turn the engine #1 piston @ tdc before installing the distributor so knowing what plug cable #1 is.
If not, remove the sparkplug #1, place your finger on the plug hole, rotate the engine by hand until air blows out under your finger knowing that the piston is at its compression stroke, eyeball the timing marks and gently turn on until the timing mark on the ballaner pulley alligns at 0.
The plug cable that correspondents (or correspondents after slightly turning the distributor) with the rotor is #1, the next clockwise terminal is plug cable #3, next #4 and last #2.

The points are set by turning the engine over by hand until one notch from the distributor shaft opens the points at its highest, now adjust the points gap at 0.016. for the 3.0L
Dwell is set with a dwell meter after at 40-45 deg.

To by pass the wiring, mark the wires on wich terminal on the coil they are. Remove them and put battery 12+ on the + terminal on the coil, replace the black wire from the distributor( points) on the - neg terminal of the coil. start the engine and it should spark.

Set the ignition with a timing light @ 8deg. before tdc.

Being out of time will not prevent spark, it just puts the spark at the wrong time.

Thank for all the tips, I got it running. It was the points that were not working correctly.
