OMC impeller replacement

I need a new impeller for my 77 Omc 235 hp...Is it a job that a half ass mechanic like myself can do or would you recommend taking it in? Is it necessary to remove the whole drive or can I just drop the lower unit? Also, can I replace just the impeller or do I have to install the whole kit?<br />Thanks for any advice

I just had mine done at a local shop... 2 hours labor and something like $75 for the kit. Kit has new seals and o-rings... I thought it necesary.<br /><br />I was going to do it myself, and the book showed that I needed to remove the entire out drive... I wasn't comfortable doing that myself, so I took it in. When he was done, I asked him if he had to take the drive off... his answer... No.

thanks for your response...I guess it would be foolish not to replace everything while I'm in there, i'd probably be sorry if I didn't. I was hoping that maybe the whole drive wouldn't have to come out....guess i'll give it a whirl....Wish me luck!<br />Thx,<br />Dan

Wish I had more info for ya...<br />I asked the guy that did the work if I could stand quietly in the corner and watch... even offered him extra cash to let me watch... his responce was a firm NO.... "my mechanics don't like to have someone looking over their shoulder"<br /><br />oh well... teach others how to do it and you loose business. Not something I should have to do very often, so oh well.

Is your drive a Cobra?<br />If so, impeller replacement is about a 10 minute job that anyone can do.<br />My drive has a long tapered plastic? cover over the back of the drive.<br />just remove the cover, and the water pump is there staring you in the face.

Your correct on that VMAX maybe 15 minutes at the most!
