OMC Inboard/Outboard 800 tilt motor problem.

I recently replaced the tilt shaft on my OMC 800 outdrive because the teeth on the shaft broke. Also, it looked like the heat circuit? on the tilt motor broke so the circuit isn't making contact. If i force the circuit to make contact the tilt motor works fine, but i don't want to run the boat like that for too long because if the motor overheats i don't want to start a fire on the boat.

My question is does anyone have any information on the components inside the tilt motor incase i can repair it myself, or order just the part i need. Also, what makes up the heat circuit breaker, is it just a low gauge solder? If so i can attach some solder to it so that contact is made.

What do you think? Thanks for the info.

I think what you're talking about are the contacts inside the motor. If so, these contacts are used to break the circuit in the case where you hold the switch in the "on" position after the drive has reached either top or bottom. Power windows in autos have the same arrangement.

These contacts are very problematic. Tilt motor manufacturers make a lot of money selling motors when the contacts are really what's bad.

When I had a drive like this I couldn't find any supplier of just the contacts. I was also unwilling to buy a new motor whenever the contacts went bad.

So I soldered a 10 gauge wire in place of the contacts and learned to not hold the switch on after motion had stopped. The motor worked fine for the five years prior to selling the boat.

I also thought about adding a 50 amp circuit breaker in-line after the solenoid (for safety). But never did that because I got comfortable with just not holding the switch down.

Hope that helps,
mike

Re: OMC Inboard/Outboard 800 tilt motor problem.

Hey Rainmaker

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure we are talking about the same thing. On the tilt motor i was working on, if you take it apart there is a flat and wide metal strip that has a contact point at the end of it. On a new motor this metal strip always makes contact because it is being held in contact by a piece of metal/solder (I don't know actually, this is what i am trying to find out.) and if the motor gets too hot or too much current this little piece of metal/solder is melted/broken and the contact is no longer made. If there is not contact then the tilt motor won't run.

On the one i am working on, the contact is broken (i think because the inside of the motor fell out when i was working on it). If i force the contact to be made the motor runs fine, so i want to try to repair the contact, i just don't know what it originally.

I hope this additional info helps and thanks again for your reply.

Here is a poor attempt at drawing the circuit breaker. The | is the piece that broke on my motor, but holds the two o's together to complete the circuit.

____________
/ | o
/____|_______o__

Now the circuit breaker looks like this...

___________
/ o
/
/____________o__

Tandt,
So the motor you're working on the contacts are held together by a soldered bridge that is broken. Is that right?

If so, that's a little different then the ones I've seen. It seems like this solder bridge would act more as a one-time fuse then an overcurrent protector for the occasional time when someone holds the switch down too long.

However, the cure is probably still valid. Permanently close the circuit and be careful not to hold the switch down too long.

Hope this helps,
mike

Was looking on EBAY last night... $150 for a "new" tilt motor. Rain... your solution sounds like a real moneysaver if the circuit protection is all that is wrong with his motor.

EDIT: Tandt... If you do the mod, I would add the circuit breaker as a precaution. However, I would use a 30 or 40 amp breaker...not 50amp. The reason is on your system the 12volt supply line that feeds the tilt uses a 50 amp fuse. Should a problem arise with the tilt motor, and you use a 50amp breaker, the high current draw could blow the fuse faster than trip the breaker. That could ruin your day if you do not have a spare fuse on hand!
