OMC inboard outboard Tilt Worm gear shaft

Ok everybody,

My tilt on my OMC (HU 16C) ​​inboard/ouboard got stuck in up position. After research and plenty of help from this site (THANK YOU!), I pulled the clutch housing apart to find bits of the worm gear shaft pins that sheared off. My question is, Can I just replace the spring pin that was in there? I understand this is designed to fail here rather than somewhere else so I don't want to cause more problems if I do this.

What do you guys and gals think?

You can replace the 2 pins. However you also have to remove the tilt motor before you reinstall the repaired shaft. There are 2 nylon thrust washers on both sides of the hammer blow coupling which keeps the coupling centered. When you pull the shaft the rear washer falls and if you force the shaft back in then the coupling gets bound up. Take a close look at the slotted end of the motor and shaft to be sure they are not starting to break. Whenever you let the drive down NEVER hold the switch down, the drive comes down so fast it will shear something every time. You have to tap the switch just a few times which lets the drive come down slowly. The purpose of the clutch is to slip slightly and absorb the impact when the drive comes down and to allow the drive to lift should you hit something. Over time the clutch plates bind together and will not slip and the clutch pack needs to come apart but you need some special tools and a press to reassemble it. Get a genuine OMC manual and there is a description of the repair.

Ok got it. Thanks for the response. on first inspection, I can’t find the bolts that release the tilt motor. Any pointers? The shaft slid right back in no problem with no resistance. I guess I’ll break it down anyway...... For some reason, my worm gear shaft only has one hole and pin.??

Scratch that last question. I looked a little harder and the are behind the disc on end of motor (drive end assembly?). Anyway, I can get one bolt out but, I don't see how you can remove the second one without moving the motor. I mean what a wonderful design that is......... Any thoughts? Anyone?

You have a real relic, the 2 pin shafts came out around 74 along with the worm that had a deeper cut. As long as you are careful lowering the drive you will be fine. Meanwhile try to locate the later style worm and shaft. The reason you cannot find the 2 bolts they are 3/8” hex and are a little tight to get to because of the rear crosswise engine bracket. If there is what looks like a wheel attached to the tilt motor that covers the bolts then you will have to remove it to get to the 2 bolts.
I just saw your post about the wheel just before posting this one.
The bolts will come out using a 12 point box wrench. It is just a tough job.
My advice is to buy a new tilt motor and get it over with, that motor’s brushes are probably down to nothing by now.
Your boat must be around 68-70 as far as I can guess.

Model number is an HU16C. It is showing 1968 on another site. Hilarious iboats won't let me type out there website address or give the link to the diagram. Understandably I guess. I'm just afraid I am going to break one of the 3/8" hex bolts.Particularly the one that is hard to reach. The other one popped loose pretty easy and backs out. I wll give it a go tomorrow. Looking up the hole where the worm gear shaft goes, I can see the male slotted end that fits the female worm gear shaft. Do you still think I need to worry about the washers having fallen out? I would be real happy just to reassemble the clutch and give it a whirl............Hopeful thinking!

If the shaft goes back in like you say give a shot. Re tighten the bolt and try to break the other one loose . The day will come when you will needing to remove the tilt motor. This is obviously a “sweet water” boat. Everything around here was pretty well corroded/rusted away after about 5-6 years. Good luck

IBoats has the same parts diagrams. I'll admit that the OEM parts finder is difficult to use, but the link to the old website on top of the page is still working fine.
