Need a little help figuring out how to change the oil in my intermediate housing on my OMC stringer 400. This is a 1985 and I have a filler hole on top, and a bottom plug. When I open both nothing comes out. When I try putting oil in top, oil will not go in. When I try putting oil in bottom it will not take.
PLEASE HELP????
Thanks

Yes it still will not take. When you place the oil in on top it goes in then the squirt that you put in and some of the old oil comes out.
What is the problem?

Re: OMC Intermediate Housing HELP?

The problem is that it's a poor design. This drive was designed in the 60's. There were a lot of drugs used back then.

I used to open both top and bottom and blow the old oil out the bottom with compressed air from the top. You'll have to do this a few times, filling with clean oil, mixing it by running the engine, then blowing it out. The bottom hole is not at the bottom of the housing, so all of the oil won't naturally drain out when the plugs are removed.

You are supposed to pump the oil in from the bottom to assure there are no air bubbles. Some of these drives have a dipstick on the top filler plug. If you have one of these, fill to the mark on the dipstick. If not, fill to within 1.5" from top of drive.

If you are patient, you can fill without a pump. Fill from the top with the bottom plug closed. Little by little, running it to purge any air, filling it some more, repeat until full.
