Hey guys Im back... I was a member a couple years ago.. but could not get my user name to work so im back as a new member..

Ok so I got pretty good with this OLD OMC Sterndrive (stringer) Got it to the point where I had no issues with it for a few years...

So me being the dummy I am found anther OLD tihull for sale that really was too good to pass up..

it was garaged by the original owner for 20 years using it only a couple times a year... then he passed away and gave it to his kids.. they used it a couple times winterized it Covered it with a nice fitting cover then let it sit for 3 years. the hour meter that works reads less than 160 hours

I went over put a little fuel in it and a fresh battery she started right up tilt trim both work fine.. steering is a little tight but thats minor..

the interior and gel coat on this are pretty dang nice considering its a 1982 boat... the only issue with the interior is they sat on the top of the fold down seats and broke the back on one (easy fix) and they never locked down the hood and the wind caught it and damaged the hinges... one small tear.. so all in all this is a BEAUTY for the price (did I say $800 buck)
Got it home had to move things around left it in the street hooked to the truck... went to move it this morning and lots of oil coming from the intermediate housing

it looks to be coming from ABOVE the ball gear but its hard to say

so my question (Yeah finally I know) I dont think I have ever sealed an intermediate, white what i can find it looks like the only thing is the gasket behind the ball gear.. or is there a seal there too?? anyone have a drawing of that..

Oh its a 250 hp with an 800 drive...

thanks so much... its good to be back..

The leak is probably coming from under the top of the gearcase. There is a “O” ring that seals the top cover to the upper gearcase. If you are going to replace the ring you have to have the drive down with a jack or some blocks under the drive other wise the lower unit will fall on your foot. It is a common “O” ring that can be matched up at a parts store like NAPA.

So you think its more likely to be in the Drive (the part that tilts) not the intermediate housing... that sounds reasonable..

Seriously its been a few years since I worked on one of these (other than adding oil LOL) once I got my other one in good shape I never had to mess with it.. so its trying to come back... but its still kind of fuzzy..

I remember droping the drive before... basically 4 bolts on the "caps" and remving the stupid wire for the electric shift... although I think this one is cable shift... the prop is different on this one.. it has the big nut in the middle not the pin through it..

thanks

I have an OLDER OMC service manual its for 1976 and earlier... I cant seem to find a picture of an oring in that manual... is the drive the same on the later 800's as they were on the earlier ones??

The upper gear case is basically the same as the electric model. The seals and “O” rings are the same. The one you have has 4 bolts on the cover while the electrics had 5. The cover plugs into a spline in the upper gear case which is the steering system.

That is the one, I think the OMC # is 310327 for the “O” ring. Be sure to use Never Seize on the bolts that hold the cover down.
If you have an 800 series that is not the correct cover. That cover was only used on the electric shift models.
