OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) 1982 Sail Drive Idle problem

I need some ideas. My '82 sail drive will not idle or run at low RPM's. It runs great at high RPM's but as soon as I slow down it dies. Will start in neutral but dies immediately. Will start in gear (forward or reverse) but throttle has to be engaged about one third speed. According to the mechanic everything that can be adjusted has been adjusted. He is stumped. I looked for a new carburetor (omc part # 389280 or 0389280) online and they seem to be non-existent. I do find repair kits. Has anyone experienced this problem and know the fix? Any one have any ideas about locating a carburetor?

What are you getting for compression? If the motor is tired, it may simply not have enough oomph...

That is the 35 hp powerhead which was " detuned " as a 15 HP unit.---Block has very small intake ports.---There is no way that you need a new carburetor !!!!!----Check compression as stated.---Check and see if you have strong spark on both leads.-----Has your mechanic checked reed valves ?----Has your mechanic checked for blocked exhaust?---Fuel pump diaphragm looked at ?

How long have you owned it ?---Is this something that developed suddenly ?---Was waterpump impeller changed recently.--Was timing / flywheel key checked ?

Owned it for 12 years. The impeller was to have been changed which is another story. We never could find the right one. ordered 5 all were too thick or had a different key way locking system from what was required for my shaft. The motor was taken apart down to the foot. problem stared after it was put back together. I don't know about the timing. I will ask. also will find out about other issues listed above. Thanks

Racerone you asked about changing the impeller. Is there a situation you are aware of that could take place if something isn't correctly put back together? your question nailed the process that took place before I had the idle problem.

Sorry , I am not standing beside your motor.--I have posted things that need to be checked on this unit.--Your mechanic should have no trouble checking this unit out.---Plus I do not understand why you could not get the correct impeller !!

After hearing different suggestions from this posting and discussing them with the mechanic, we have parted ways. I believe he was the problem (not interested in working in tight quarters with an old motor). this became apparent when he started challenging you guys. yes I cancelled his check and yes we are not on good terms as of this correspondence. Now on the the future. Another person will check it out next week and offer his opinion. He will get the full back story. We will decide on the next steps.

Racerone - you bring up a great point about the impeller. However I have come to the conclusion why 5 didn't fit. I don't think the guy knew what he was doing and wasted time and money. I am rethinking the process regarding my next steps. it maybe I'm more long term cost effective to replace the sail drive with an outboard. My area doesn't seem to have experienced people with this motor especially a 1982 model. they also baulk at the tight working conditions. Maybe it is time to move on. if I go the outboard route (and pull the saildrive - I might just leave it where it is and take off the prop) I will most likely put it out for sale. Decisions! Decisions! Thanks for the input. I'll let you know.

Thanks for all the suggestion and ideas. The motor is running great now. The low speed carburetor adjustment screw had vibrated out. I added a friction spring it is working great. As for the tight forward and reverse, the problem was in the controls located in the cockpit. once I figured how to take this apart (could not locate instructions) I found cogs were not engaging correctly. A little grease and a few adjustments it is shifting like normal. Again thanks for the help.
