I was helping a freind winterize his boat this fall and loosened a screw that I thought was the lower unit water drain ( see pics with the duck tape)
Guess what this is a screw that has a nut on the in side of the lower unit.
I am new to this forum and posted on some one elses post but got a few good awnsers on what to do.
Now I think I have it right on what needs to be done.
1: take off the 6 bolts, three on each side of the lower unit.
2: pull the two bolts holding the rams out.
3: pull the lower unit away from the back of the boat.
4: find the nut in the water jacket and re install.
5: change the impeller while I in there.
6: put the lower unit back together opposit from takeing it apart.
Did I miss anything?

Sounds good, also good time to check alignment, condition of bellows, and grease u-joints and gimbal bearing. And use new drive gasket. 'nutcase

Howdy,

Yes you did remove the "Never Remove This Screw", screw!!

Pulling the drive is probably the easiest way to find the small, flat, tapped plate that fell off inside.

You don't need to be "in there" to change the raw water pump though. It is accessible without removing the drive (probably the only good thing about a Cobra)

Since you're "in there" you should also carefully inspect the drive bellows, U-joints, and check the alignment!

If your winterization did not include changing the engine and drive oil, you should do that too!

Cheers,

Rick

Re: Omc King Cobra Screw Up

The impeller is behind the plastic cover on the back of the upper drive
housing ( the V shaped cover)...very easy,They can be hard to find because they are a different size than the regular Cobra impeller.
The last one i bought i had to order from the West coast for about 125 bucks.
King Cobra parts are getting very scarce.

Its not the cone clutch King Cobra...its the regular Cobra that they started calling the King Cobra. That drive is the standard dog clutch vesion.

Mine was a "Dog-Clutch" King Cobra....It was only used with the 460..........It was bigger, heavier and held more oil than the other (smaller) Cobras..... Not much inside interchanged with the "regular" Cobras.......Although, I believe the raw water pump (housing, impeller, gaskets, etc) on the back WAS the same as all the other Cobras.

Rick
