OMC locked up lower unit

Hey guys i have a 1986 Seaswirl with a 4.3 litre and an omc outdrive, stinger 400 or 800 not sure of which on. last summer i had outdrive problems , after taking the lower unit off it seems that the lower unit is locked up. has anybody rebuilt one of these? what tools are needed to take it apart to find the damage? any advice is appreciated

Best advice, start by buying a manual for that drive. See what tools you need, what procedures have to happen, and determine if you're comfortable with doing the work.

Stringer mount 800 series drives were paired to the 4.3 in 1985 only, but not in 1986
You might have a 1986 boat with a 1985 drive system in it from new, but you want the manual for 1985. A 1986 manual will only show Cobra drives.


reading your other post - which compartment did you find the black, smelly oil in?
Upper, Intermediate, or lower?

Not a lot of special tools to disassemble, just the same puller one would use for any lower unit bearing carrier,
391257 is what is used to set pinion shimming, but I dunno if someone has another process.... its a $250 tool
