do you have to remove the whole lowerunit to change the water pump or can you just remove the mid section from the upper section. I don't want tomess with the cable adjustment if I don't have to.

i suppose anything is possible but job is much easier with outdrive off
because the shift cable runs through the upper gearcase you run the risk of damaging it while trying to replace water pump (also in uppergear case)
if you don't have a manual get one

I have a manual and everywhere it say's to remove it but I didn't know if it was just convience or mandatory. It also didn't clearly show the shift cable and how it runs thru or around the upper gear case.

wlynch2360

my 1978 800 does not have a shift cable, it is just a wire that you unhook and pull through, not cables to mess with. guess it depends on the year?

It is a 1979 with hyd shift assist in the outdrive. but the shift cable assy. has several steps just to disconnect it never mind reinstalling it and recalibrating it.

sprayed some PB Blaster (a corrosion dissolver)on both sides let it sit overnight worked the cable side to side and still it wouldn't come out. will spray again and wait another day and hope for the best. Should not had let my wife talk me into this boat. Had bad vibes about the OMC drive.

Does anyone know where I can pick-up a cable for a 1978 OMC 800 with Hydraulic assist shifting. all say to convert over to straight manual at a cost of $1700+ for a new lower unit which doesn't come with the cable and housing.

First of all, you should calm down. Mercruisers are no panacea either. Why do you need a cable? I see them on ebay quite frequently however currently there are none.

See if you can find an OMC guru in your area. Up until they quit producing OMC's there were about as many sold as Mercs, so there has to be someone in your area that is knowledgable on them.

I happen to fortunate to live near an OMC maestro. He just went thru my '79 hydro-assist drive. The only thing wrong were some worn water pump shafts, albeit not cheap.

He also did a modification that would be well advised. He remove a hydraulic pump screen that is prone to plugging up and removed the emergency forward assist spring for the foward gear. It all makes the unit more reliable and shift easier.

Other than all of that, lower mechanical shift 800's show up on ebay at reasonable prices. I would be prepared however to have a used one gone thru after purchace.

As to removing your shiftcable from the intermediate housing, have you been able to remove the retainer screw?

Remember that these are complex things, regardless of the brand. There are many who would not want to touch their Mercs and Volvos either. Just remember you have no gimbal bearings and motor alignment issues to worry about. :p

one of the problems is that some of the experts here just flat out disdain your unit cause they don't work on them.
