Just purchase a '61 OMC Deluxe and I'm new to this forum. Thanks for being there for all of us!
255HP (WIndsor 351 ?), (w/mercruiser valve covers). "225HP" sterndrive"( 800?)
. Problems as follows:
- water coming out of side covers of top of sterndrive, and not out of the rear/top of sterndrive. gasket and "O"rings appear new.
Other than these few minor details, it's mint!
Thanks for your help! -Philip.

Re: OMC newbie

I'm not sure when 800s were first released, but the HP would indicate an 800 if they made them back then.

Cable-maybe it was installed improperly, or the wrong cable.

Stearing-the outdrive may have been re-installed with the steering wheel not centered or the drive not at center position.

Side covers-Pivot cap covers I'm guessing. You probably have a bad o-ring, gasket, or both. Engine will overheat in this consdition I would think.

Tilt- motor is probably shot. Try tapping it while hitting the switch-if it moves, you know you have a short in it.

You have quite a project!

Re: OMC newbie

Yours is an "Electric" unit, not an 800. (800 drives were later, 1978-1986)
The good news: being an electric shift model, reversed shifting is simply reversed wires somewhere.

The Seloc manual covers 1964-1986

Re: OMC newbie

I started this boat in the water yesterday with the oil fill plug removed from the intermediate unit! Is just the lower unit oil contaminated? Do I just remove the lower unit, drain, and refill w/ 30 wt?. As there is water in the unit, I assume this is an emergency!
(Manual is in the mail)
Thank for you quick response!, Philip.

Re: OMC newbie

If the plug was out of the intermediate, then the water will be in the intermediate. Am I missing something?

If you put 30 weight in that outdrive, it will fail very quickly.

Electric stringer drives use OMC type C oil, no exceptions, no substitutes.

Re: OMC newbie

Thanks, Everybody.. Can you help me with the proper procedure for changing the oil? The manual won't be in until next week.Assume complete ignorance of al boat related things. (I do work on cars, planes, and motos.)
The plug that was removed was the plug on the foward side of the drive, approx. 5" above the lower fill point marked "oil level".Is the water just in the intermediate?
Thanks again.
