1988 2.3l Omc Cobra. Pulled my outdrive for the first time myself and their is what appears to be oil in the universal bellows,my oil in the lower unit is at the proper level.Could this just be excessive grease that has broken down from the gimble bearing,their isnt any signs of a leaking seal anywhere.

No, it's not normal. Was the drive overfilled the last time it was filled? Could be a bad front oil seal. hard to say without actually seeing it or doing a pressure test on the drive.;

No the drive hasn"t been overfilled at least not in the last 2 seasons.I suppose its possible it could leak only when the shaft is turning,the oil is coming from somewhere.

I have seen grease break down like on trailer hubs but not as thin as gear lube.Better get the drive pressure tested.

I can't find a siera or omc # for a bearing carrier seal for a 1988 2.3l omc.

Click Here for the OMC/BRP parts catalog.
Click the View parts catalog button.
Then click the dropdown menu arrow beside PRODUCTS and select Stern Drive and click GO

You are on your own after that, but you will have the OMC part numbers.

I've removed OMC drives that had a lot of grease built up by the Gimble bearing. Some of which had thinned out and looked oily.
