Hi again. All of your help was key in my last problem, so again im calling on you all for help again.
2 weeks ago, im tooling across the lake at top speed, when the motor completely quits. it sounds rather vague, but I (and a certified mechanic friend of mine) have narrowed it down to the outdrive. The motor is fine. I need a few pages of a manual that describe replacement procedures of bearings (roller and gimbal and any others that may apply). Again, any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: OMC out drive problem...

If the drive failed to the point it killed the engine it is probably way more than the gimbal bearing..Sounds like it locked up inside the drive.
It takes a bunch of special tools and the whole section of the service manual to rebuild the outdrive.
Best bet is to get the original service manual...

Is this a Merc or OMC or Volvo...?

Oops..noticed its OMC...is it a Cobra?

Was the outdrive oil changed just recently? If so, someone may have filled it up using the bottom drain screw instead of the middle drain screw and that caused an air pocket. After running a bit the oil filled the air pocket and the lowered level allowed the upper gears and bearings to run dry. That often tears up the gear teeth or locks up the bearings. Either way it is a super expensive repair caused by someone who did not fill the gearcase correctly.

Aren't you supposed to use the bottom and not the top?

No problem!
You may want to take the top cover off and look at the upper gears. It is the 4 bolts on the cover where the dipstick is.
Very possible it was run low on lube.
The Cobra drives are filled from the center hole on the drive.Very easy to not get the right amount of lube in.
They hold more lube than many other drives. The Cobra 4.3 to 5.7 hold at least 64 ounces.
There is a special method to fill and is covered in the service manual.

I always fill my Cobra drive from the bottom (takes 2 quarts). Where is the center fill located?

Ahhaaa, between the top and the bottom..

No really...It's toward the front of the drive and top of the lower. on the starboard side like the others.

Pull bottom, then top to drain, Then put bottom back in and fill from middle. It will force the air down and back up and out the top.

Also make sure the drive is down so the bullet is level or slightly tucked under to fill to avoid an air pocket in the prop end of the bullet.

You should always run on muffs after oil change and then recheck the level.
