Re: omc outdrive wont go up

Sounds like your tilt motor (most common thing it turns out to be, I think): Start by making sure your trunions are well lubricated and make sure your clutch pack isn't full of gunk. It should be lube oil in there - not milk.

When you hit the switch to go down, do you hear the motor run?

The next step really if everything is lubed up and the clutch pack is good is to pull that motor and check it ... but those mugs are waaaaaayyyyyy back in your bilge and not particularly fun to get at.

To get at mine I was able to pull off the lower doghouse of the engine compartment once I did that I trimmed the motor up and was able to get my hand in there pretty easily. Is this with the boat running or trailered?....mine won’t move too well with a low battery. Have someone gently lift the outdrive as you engage the switch and see if goes up then.

If you pull the motor be careful of the hammer coupler…previous owner of my boat replaced the tilt motor and didn’t line it up right and ground down the tilt shaft so i had to replace it.

Thanks, what kind of grease do I you use in the clutch pack, the manual says to use special grease type c is that still available. I pulled the motor to check it . The hammer blow coupling is ok, but where do I find one of those, just in case I need one some day .
The boat sat for seven years, so I have to go thru all the systems, I have done the fuel system , engine harness, now the outdrive , I think the boot for the o/d shrunk < it is not sealed at the bottom, can they be replaced without taking the o/d off
Thanks, Rich

The clutch housing is normally filled with regular motor oil, but some guys here that have had problems with water leaking in have packed it with grease instead and it seems to work well. I still use regular motor oil in mine and it is fine. Type C gear oil is just for the lower units of electric shift stringer drives, you can use regular gear oil in the upper. The boot can be changed without pulling the drive just lube the new on really well with soap and be careful, that's how I did mine. However, if the boat has been sitting for that long you are going to want to pull the drive anyway to replace the impeller, check/replace the pump housing & grease the pump shaft splines so you might as well do the boot then.
