I am looking to buy a boat and it has a 350 motor and an omc outdrive and I am wondering what is so bad about the omc and just how hard it is to get parts, and also should I just stay away from omc before I buy a big headache

Re: OMC outdrive

Run away. As a new guy I'd suggest you spend time researching past threads about OMC's, we've got it pretty well covered here. Unless it's a late model SX/Volvo (and even these are hard to source parts) OMC drives are to be avoided.

Re: OMC outdrive

Why do I see(and hear) a scene from Monty Pythons "Holy Grail"??:D

or from star wars......RUN LUKE.......RUN

The OMC's were good in there day.....however....they are now old and the parts are wearing out, as well.....not too many guys will repair them any more.
this is compounded by the fact that the parts are mostly obsolete....iboats does have stock on some parts. but a merc or volvo is a better built drive and they are readily avalable.

just a side note......i know several boat sales persons and gms from dealerships.

the rule of thumb about a boat drive was if it was black....the purchaser didnt care because most boats had a black drive sticking out the back of a boat....
the sales people said in every case....if it wasnt black (a merc) the the sales person would also have to sell the drive on the boat....not just the boat.
again.....if it was a merc.....the potential customer didnt even ask about the drive

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,... OMC has been outa business for Over a Decade...

As far as the Parts issue,... It only takes 1 missin', unobtainable part to ruin yer boatin'...
NLA is a pretty common part number for OMC parts...

Although I agree currently available drives are a better choice, especially for a new boater, I've never seen any evidence that OMCs were poorly built. Mine has lasted 20 years without a design or manufacturing related issue. OMC went out of business due to poor company management, not because of bad products.

Re: OMC outdrive

As I stated in your other post, If you aren't sure what you have, post pictures or model/serial numbers in your thread in the OMC forum. Without even a hint as to the year, you could have any number of drives hooked up to a 350 engine. That engine has been around for decades.

We are gonna have to ask why . . .

. . . it may be better to try to tell the difference between an Alpha and a Bravo . . . ;)
