OMC Pertronix Install ?

Just a quick question, I am going to install a pertronix system on my 88 460 and get rid of the points, my system has a resistance wire instead of a ballace resistor. The question is how did you run the power wire, do you run it right to the pos side of the coil or do you splice it into the resisance wire? The only reason I am asking is because Rapair suggested to keep the resistance wire in place due to using a low resistance coil.

Do what the Pertronix instructions say. Many of the kits use the resistor wire or ballast resistor already in the system.
When you get your kit, read the instructions.

Re: OMC Pertronix Install ?

you CANNOT power up the ignitor via the resistance wire, it wont work.
the coil primary wire will stay on the coil just as it is now to provide current, the switching will be done in the igntor but the ignitor require 12V.
its not real clear in the instructions but if you have a resister wire then wire it like the diagram for the ballast resistor.
the only "advantage" I can see with petronix would be it requires no real maint.
a well maintained point set will do anything the petronix will.
all the petronix is is an electronic switch rather than mechanical.
its slightly cleaner electrically and has no periodic maint.

Thanks for all the input, the instructions weren't the clearest but I did what they said. I ran the power wire directly the the ignition switch and left the resistance wire alone, starts up good and the idle is a lot smoother than before.

When I switched over, I also went with the Flamethrower 3 ohm coil. That allowed me to bypass the resistor wire and go 12 volt to the coil. Had to run a seperate wire anyway, this just made it a neater install to connect the
Ignitor.

Don't forget about the ESA modification.

Re: OMC Pertronix Install ?

Just to add a little, I installed a Pertronix in my AQ125 yesterday. Dispite the instructions, I had to "Punch out" the points wire connection to install the new wire set. This makes the distributer only electronic friendly. I cannot put the point set back in. Heads up for anyone with an AQ125.
