The primer on my 1987 70 evinrude works intermitently...some times works fine others will not unless I flip the red bypass on the primer...I have rebuilt the primer with a new diaphram ...any thoughts?

Re: omc primer problem

does the motor run good after getting cranked?? fuel pump problems are what I am wondering about. Or you may have an electrical short inside of the primer..
Check voltage at the primer when it is not working. Do you still hear it click when it seems to not be working??? Also check the hoses coming out of the primer and make sure it is pumping fuel through them.
Good Luck Sparkie

Re: omc primer problem

could be a dirty ground on primer,or bad switch,or the purple white may be corroded /bad connection,or just be that the primer which has windings is goin bad,you can get a piece of wire ,jump from the positive on starter solonoid, and disconnect the purple white to the primer, touch the jump to the primer and c if it reacts properly,if so,check your connections at the keyswitch,it could be the keyswitch goin bad,you can eliminate the choke function of keyswitch and use a pushbutton between the purple accy.and purple white .This was a more popular setup when keyswitch was not part of control box
