Hello:
I have a question about the omc quick start system thats on my 98 evenrude 115 intruder, when i bought the boat new with this engine i dont ever remember it having the quick start warm up mode where if under 105 degrees it goes into a fast idle and advances the timing 10 degrees till the engine was ovqr 105 degrees , i never had a problem with it starting or dieing out . Well the power pack went bad this summer so i replaced it with a cdi power pack now the quick start works when engine is below 105 degrees. But now what a pain in but you have to wait till the motor comes off high idle to put it in gear as per omc owner manuel says if you put it in gear while in high idle it can damage the clutch dogs, i had our classic this last weekend AIR TEMP WAS 47 DEG WIND 20 TO 30 MPH WATER 50 DEG IF YOU STOPPED TO FISH FOR JUST 30 MIN MOTOR WOULD COOL OFF TO BELOW 105 DEG AND THE QUICK START WOULD KICK IN AGAIN AND WOULD HAVE TO WAIT 4 OR 5 MIN TILL I COULD PUT IT INGEAR DOES ANY ONE KNOW OF A WAY AROUND THIS QUICK START THING.
THANKS ALLEY MECHANIC

Re: Omc quick start question

Chances are you have a thermostat problem in one or both heads as it is taking way to long for the motor to warm up. It may not even be warming up enough as the newer packs have a time-out circuit in them.

both themostats were changed out this summer along with temp sensors , during summer quick start comes on first start in morning motor does not cool to below 105 degrees even after a hour of fishing, and what is a time out circut never heard of it thanks for the reply

Cant you put it in Neutral and rev the motor? I though quick stop was dis-engaged when the engine revs over 1500 RPM

Quickstart is dis-engaged when you rev the motor up past 1200 RPM, however, that does you no good, as it is too fast to shift. That motor should not cool off that fast, even when the temp is low. Quickstart is activated each time you start the motor, warm or not, but is only active for a few seconds. If it is working correctly, it is hardly noticeable.

When it is really cold my '98 Johnny can take 5 minutes to warm up. However, once it is warm, it never really cools off, while fishing. Not sure if you have an issue.....What is your hot idle RPM?

my hot idle is about 750 in neutral and 650 abouts in gear during last summer motor stays hot hours while fishing durning last weekend it was in low 40 and a cold rain most of the day with sleet i belive thats why the mot56or did not hold heat long and had to threw the warm up cycle after just about 30 to 45 min , i just wanted to know what other people with this year motor does do they slam it in gear not good or wait till quick start drops out.

Re: Omc quick start question

Maybe the best option would be to put a spdt switch somewhere on your dash which would allow you the option of either overriding quick-start or else enabling it. For first start of the day leave it enabled 'til engine warms up, then disable it after that. This would involve locating the temperature switch used for quick start (there are two temperature switches on the port head, one for overheat and one for quickstart) and bringing a wire forward from that.

Re: Omc quick start question

Wait until QS cycle ends. Slamming it into gear is real hard on the gears. Qs should end in 30 sec or so, even on the coldest day. Overriding the QS will make the motor slow to start, hence the name......
