OMC Sea Drives?

I am currently looking to purchase a used boat with twin 84 115hp OMC Sea Drives. One engine was rebuilt and has 50hrs and the other has 130hrs. I have previously only owned boats with Merc I/Os and am not familiar with this motors. I have read that they are no longer made. Is that due to design problems? Are they in general a reliable power option? Are parts available? Should I run away? If some one could give me the skinny on these engines I would be very grateful.

Re: OMC Sea Drives?

hello
I would run. or at least figgure in the cost of a replacement with a bracket. the seadrive were a good idea that did not gain any popularity. not only did OMC discontinue them now the company is out of business. I think they were discontinured in the early 90's. I dont trust anything that is odd and hard to find parts for. the plus side is the powerhead and gearcase was all mostly standard outboard stuff and is still all availible.
sorry to muddy the waters but good luck and keep posting

Hi,
Another question. Was the lack of popularity due to the Sea Drive mount or was due to the OMC engine?

CBM,

The mounts. The engines were fine.

There wasn't really even anything wrong with the mounts. They were too much of a specialty item and many boatbuilders didn't buy in.

CBM - I have a pair of 1987s & have had them for 10 years. Never a problem with the SeaDrives. Had one motor rebuilt when I bought it & had a remanufactured one installed on the other side last year. Great boat - 23' Wellcraft CC.
