OMC Series 800 tilt clutch torque question

I have a 1979 Cobalt with twin 305's and Series 800 outdrives. I have been troubleshooting the tilt mechanism for days now. I have replaced the tilt shaft and done everything according to the 2,000 posts regarding the same issue. Now today, here is where I am. Lift motor is turning without the weight of the outdrive on it. If I raise the outdrive by hand and hold it, and then tilt the outdrive up, the clutch moves and the quadrant gear moves. I then "set" the outdrive down on the lift assembly and it falls back down. So the clutch is not holding it up. Nor is it letting it go up with the weight of the outdrive on it.

Now I just found a post that says that the clutch pack has to be torqued and "turned" correctly or this will happen. How do you do that? When I got this boat( 5 days ago!), the clutch housing was full of water/oil and the tilt shaft was broken. I cleaned and replaced all broken parts, took the clutch apart, cleaned thoroughly and took the clutch to a transmission shop to get compressed to get the snap ring on. I didn't add any shims or take any out. I just used what was originally in there. Can someone please help with this????

Mine started slipping several years ago. It was a pain to procure new clutch parts in time, so I added an .035 stainless shim I made, put it back together, it was good for years.

When i remove my housing for my Clutch it was a Milk Shake...

Be carefull when you remove them. Watch out for Nylon washer. they are about $5 dollar for 1 if you find one. and its very critical for you TILT to work properly.

Try to remove the whole clutch clean it up and clean the housing also..

Repack it with GREASE. LOTS OF GREASE.
------------------------------------------------

If that dont work.. check if you have FULL charge Battery. rigth now my TILT will not go up because iam not giving 12V into the Motor. it barely go up.. so voltage play a big part for the TILT to go up properlly

---------------

If the battery is Good. do this..

Go where your TILT motor is...
there will be 3 wires. i belive its BLUE, RED, and Black..

very important.. this is how i found out that my MOTOR was mezz up..
COnnect Negative to the BLACK wires. and Connect the Positive to the RED wire or the BLUE wire.. i think blue wire is for it togo UP and the Red togo DOWN.... Dont let the Positive Wire TOUCH BLUE AND RED AT THE SAME TIME..

NOTE:::

Make sure you clean the CLutch Pack first and check the battery before you try hot wire the motor.. because if you dont clean the clutch pack and check battery voltage. DOING the hotwire will be useless.

LOL.. if your not like me.. Please Dont remove the MOTOR for the TILT> OMG they are a PAIN in the AZZ to put back. specially when you dont have any space to work around it... ONLY remove the motor when its BROKEN

Re: OMC Series 800 tilt clutch torque question

Thank you so much for sending me this! The diagram will help me alot. I am thinking that when I took all the clutch plates apart, that I might not have got them in the correct order. I will take the clutch back apart, re clean them all and then compress them back on the shaft. I believe that is my problem. Thanks again for helping me out with this! This is a life saver, or at least a HUGE stress re leaver!!

Wow. you Un-pack the clutch. plate by plate... cool. i never had todo that..maybe i should have. but hey . it work for me

... LOL i just have to say this again.. hehe

DONT REMOVE THE MOTOR.. that's your last resort.. MOTOR has this devices call Hammer blow.. it needs to be put back a certain way. and if you dont have a lot of space to put them properly you will have some MORE STREESSS in your hand..
and not to mention that it needs to have a certain amount of clearance between the motor and the Shaft. and if you dont put the nylon washer back or the proper gasket. you will been there for a while..:D

I believe the motor leads are black (neg ground), blue (up), green (down).

You need the shims in there. And I found out the hard way there is a easy way and a hard way to take these apart. The clip facing the cover is the clip you are supposed to take off to service. The shims are on the other side and they are very easily damaged and unavailable.

Yea, I know what you mean about the motor. My tilt shaft was broken and I couldn't get it out pulling it from the outdrive side, so I had to remove the motor and pull it out that way. That really sucked getting that motor out and back in. My back is still killing me from that! I did get that nylon washer back on the shaft, so hopefully that whole thing is good. Tomorrow I will take the clutch plates apart and make sure they are in the correct order.

Yea, I did take the clutch plates apart that way. I then took it to a transmission shop to have them compress it and put the snap ring back on.

Re: OMC Series 800 tilt clutch torque question

Fixed!!!! Thanks longstand for the manual and help. I took the clutch back apart again, and with the diagram in the manual, I was able to realize that the transmission shop that I took it to to get compressed had removed one of the shims. I guess they got lazy...Anyways, with the shim back in, it works like a charm now.

**Lesson learned,,,always count the shims and clutch plates after getting them compressed by someone else!!***
