Petronix recommended fix when installing electronic ignition on cobra and omc systems. Can anyone share their experience (good or bad) after installing the "FIX". I think it was NEWPORT DAVE that had posted last year on this topic and was curious as to results. Thanks in advance.

Re: OMC shift assist fix.

Here is the link to the thread from last year;

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=010211#000000

After hearing reports that it gets hot and not really being able to get an answer to the question of "how hot does it get?", I deceided to use a Pertronix compatiable shift assist module instead of using the "fix". So the one that I made sits unused and untested. I have since read a few reports from guys that have used the "fix" and they seem to say that it works ok.

Dave

I just bought a new ESA module from CDI/RAPAIR.

I questioned the old one I had anyway. Order one that is Pertronix compatable and you will not have to do the mod. I downloaded a cross reference at Rapair dot comm.

I ordered it through Boat Fix, as Iboats did not have it, but you may want to check with them first anyway.

I think the "P" is all they stock. It will work both ways.

So if I understand correctly, with the cdi 123-8989-p there is NO need for the infamous SHIFT ASSIST FIX? It just seems to simple to be true, but thanks again all. Neil

Believe it!

My ESA module was dead anyways, so I used the Rapair unit when installing Pertronix. I thought there were different ones for 4 cyl, 6 cyl, 8 cyl..so make sure you get the right one. Other than having to hack off the connector and use my dead ESA's connector (I won't say whether I crimped or soldered :) ), it was an easy install.
Reset the timing after install... mine was off a few degrees after Pertronix install.
