OMC shift linkage

I finally have the overheating under control. Now I need to know the trick to adjusting the shift linkage. When I adjust it to go forward it will not go in reverse. When I adjust it to go in reverse I don't have forward. Paddling is not really an option. Help please. Thanks

It would help to know what OMC drive you are working on. Electric, Stringer, Cobra. Contrary to popular belief they are not all the same.

I have an 89 Cobra and the old impeller wasn't too bad. Thanks for help with linkage adjustment.
