OMC shift problem

I am new to this site and hope someone can help me. I have a 1989 OMC Cobra in a Bayliner 2750. I was out on the river having a great boating day. Upon returning to my marina and running a no wake speed I went to shift my boat into reverse to stop my forward momentum and back into my slip. The boat would not shift out of forward and continued in that direction. My shiftter had no resistence to it at all, as if my cable had popped. I felt no strain, and nothing break. After getting it into the slip I checked my cable from shift handle to engine, it was fine. I the removed the shift cable (from engine to transom) from the engine and attempted to manualy shift it. This cable had no resistance at all. But it did not come out as I would have expected if it were broken. I did just have this cable replaced last season (13 months ago). can anyone help troubleshoot this before I waste too much time with this?

Re: OMC shift problem

You probably need to pull the drive and see if the cable is still operating the bellcrack correctly and then manually shifting the drive with the shift lever that goes to the lower unit.
