Omc shifting problems

Hello everyone just joined the site. Please correct me if I make any mistakes while I'm on this site. Have a few questions. I have a 1990 omc cobra 4.3 V6 HO. Having shifting problems. Destroyed one out drive this summer. Ordered two new outdrive should be here around Christmas. Question. My omc is coil pack not distributer. Can you put shift assist module on. I don't have any on mine. Also. Do I have to stick with omc out drive or is there something better that is compatible

You should have the cutout/shift assist switches installed.
Check them for proper activation?

Without the ESA system it will never shift out of gear easily. CDI electronics sells ESA modules for OMCs in case the original equipment is no longer available.
