OMC inboard engine stalls after it runs for a while. Mechanic has replaced fuel pump, filter and water pump and we still have the same problem. We've now had the fuel pump replaced 2 times. This time we were able to start her up at a very high rpm just to get back to the dock but it stalled again right before the dock. I didn't want to burn out the starter to get it going again so we swam the boat in. We are taking it back to the mechanic but are afraid they are going to replace unecessary parts and still not going to solve the issue. If anyone has any suggestions, we would be happy to listen. The boat has been in the shop almost all summer and three different times for the same problem.

Estelle, please poist a bit more info on you engine and drive (year, size, HP, model and serial no etc. It will help these guys help you.

By the way, I would consider getting a second mechanics opinion. If changing the fuel pump did not fix the problem, I just cant see how doing it twice or more is going to solve it. There are a lot of postings telling about fuel delivery systems and the components to change (seperator, micro filter, lines, antisiphon valve pick up tube, venting issues, dirty tank just to name a few.

You are right. I cannot read the tag on the Motor very well. I believe it's a 3.0L OMC Cobra. The cobra part I can read easily. Thank you for the advice, I am hoping someone has had the same issues. I am afraid they are going to keep charging us an arm and a leg and not fix the issue. They don't have a lake to test it on so everytime we take it out it acts up again.

What year?? Is it a carb engine?? They are not doing the job so either get them to garantee the work or take it some where else. I am not sure how they can be a boat repair place if they can not test the bnoat to see if the problem it was brought in for is fixed. Definately get a new place, maybe closer to where you take the boat out at.

Fuel delivery issues take some time and effort to diagnose. Just search this site and you'll see a majority of the threads deal with some type of fuel delivery issue or over heating proiblem. Get them to check (whom ever you get to do the work) all the items I put in the post above ((seperator, micro filter, lines, antisiphon valve pick up tube, venting issues, dirty tank) as a minimum. Look through the other posts in this site on fuel issues and make sure you get all of the ideas communicated to your (hopefully) new mechanic.

Re: OMC Stalls after it runs for a while

Thank you and I am taking the list to this mechanic first thing tomorrow morning. The problem is he puts another part on the boat without asking that most likely doesn't need replacing and then charges us an arm and a leg and it still doesn't work, same problem.. Can I actually have him warranty the fact that he didn't fix it right the first time? He is warrantying the parts and labor of what he already replaced.. then he also keeps the boat for 3 to 4 weeks to replace a water pump and fuel filter.. I feel he is ripping me off big time or is just putting parts on as a process of elimination. Hopefully he will listen and check the list you gave me. I have looked, searched, and read other postings and most say the same as you do.. The only concern I have, could it be the carburator? How would we check that? And can that make the fuel pump burn out twice..?? I appreciate all the advice you have given me, thank you...
