Omc 2.3 cobra, starter locks up sometimes. If I tap on it she will go ahead and turn over. I was told it needs either rebuilt (armature and brushes) or replaced. Do these parts have to be marine? I know most parts do with the exception of a few things, is this an exception?
One more question: My charging meter showed onlhy 12 volts for a bit then it jumped to 14( which is where it normally is) any ideas here?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Yes, you must have a marine starter due to spark danger in the enclosure.

Ok, how about to rebuild the starter? Is this possible on a marine starter?

Toby
No reason you can not get new starter brushes and install and clean up the armature. Just make sure spark screen put back in place if you have to remove. The voltage thing could just be a sticking gauge. I would check with a volt meter at the battery before I did any thing else.

Re: OMC starter question......

The only difference between a marine starter is that it is sealed with silicone, has a plate inside and is painted to protect it from the harsh marine environment. I just replaced my marine unit with a automotive starter for $49.99 at VIP Auto, removed the plate from the marine unit and installed it in the automotive unit, sealed it up and put a fresh coat of enamel paint on it. This is now just the same as a marine starter for $55 including paint. I did have this verified by more than a few marine mechanics in my area and all said the same thing. There's not THAT much difference in a $225 marine starter and a $50 automotive starter. Hope this helps.

JP
