I just got a boat off my buddy who took the lower off and I'm havin a hard time getting the steering cable back into place. It's a 1977 crestliner with a 5 liter OMC cobra. Is there an easier way that I'm not seeing or what? If anyone has done this before I would appreciate some guidance. Thanks!

a 1977 cobra??? I dont think they made the cobra in 1977??? but I could be wrong, but for that year, depending on the motor size, I would think its a 400 or 800 series not the cobra, unless it was changed

yea my mistake I caught that after I submitted it. It's a stinger and I need to know how many times the cable should be wrapped around each roller.

oh wow- the steering cable comes off as an assembly - he shouldn't have taken the cable off the drums. not necessary - Shoulda read the manual.
The drums are filled when properly assembled - no empty grooves in the drums. The white plastic nuts provide the tension when it's all back together.

Kjdkjd has it , if the cables have been removed from the drum it is a nightmare. The entire assemble slides off easily with the removal of a set screw.

Take a look at the drum on the steering wheel. This may give you an idea of how it should be.

1977 Outdrive should be an Electric Shift Unit. My guess is that it would be a 1978 or newer unit, probably an 800.

Best to start your own thread victornator. I would post it in the mercury outboard forum. More people with outboard and outboard steering experience will see it there.

Either way Lyndy, he would most likely have the same Tru-Course steering.
