Hello Boating community,
?I'm very new to this forum so please excuse me if I do anything wrong. I tried to read all the guidelines for posting a new topic and I hope I meet those guidlines. I tried searching for this topic and I could not find it anywhere in pasts posts. However I find it very hard to believe that I'm the first person to come across these problems that I'm having.
With that being said, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is EliRosieNY (or Glenn), I have been restoring a 1987 v170 cobra stern drive with a 140hp I/o OMC motor... I'm in the process of redoing the ignition system but I'm having a really hard time finding my parts.
I purchased the boat from an older gentleman who had no information about the boat or the motor. After getting the motor to run, I put it out in the water and after about 10 minutes or so the motor stalled out. I took a quick look at the fuel system and noticed that the fuel lines running from the fuel tank to the fuel pump (or fuel bowl containing the filter) were dry... The fuel bowl was also dry. I'm not quite sure exactly why they were dry but I figured that this had to been the reason why my motor stop running. After a few minutes I'm sitting in the water and decide to spray a little starting fluid inside the carb to see if I can get it to start back up again. It starts back up for approximately one and a half seconds and shut right back down again. I put two and two together and decided that obviously I have a fuel issue. So I decided to try to Prime the lines and get fuel to the carb. But before that, I had my son increase the throttle so I can watch to make sure that fuel was still getting to the carb. As he increase the throttle a little squirt of fuel was then pushed into the carburetor. After that, I was thoroughly confused.. thinking to myself why did my motor stall if it's still getting fuel? So next, I decide to check the ignition system. Starting with the distributor cap and spark plugs and wires everything looked to be clean. I move down to the coil and as I feel the coil, I burn my fingers on it. At this point we have been sitting in the water for at least 20 minutes so I figured that the coil should have been cool to the touch by then ( but I may be wrong). So now I have two issues, one being that the fuel lines and bowl were dry, and two, that the coil seem to have been overheating. So now I believe that my coil has been burnt out and I might need a new fuel pump?!?!.

I haven't quite gained the knowledge to be able to troubleshoot all of my ignition system issues to make sure that the coil is bad, but I wanted to search and find a spare coil so that I have one on the boat with me at all times. I have read on the forums that the resistor going to the coil should be replaced every few years. So I decided to go ahead and try to find the resistor wire, ignition coil, distributor cap and a spare rebuild kit.

So here is my problem, I know that I have a 1987 Rinker v170 with a 140hp OMC COBRA, but Im not 100% sure what year the motor is. I assume(I know, assumptions are never a good thing) that the motor would be the same year. So I go out and buy a CLYMER OMC Cobra sterndrive shop manual for the 1987 Rinker v170.

When I look online to try to find the parts for my boat motor none of them are matching up with the ignition system that I have. When I search online for 1987 OMC 3 liter ignition system I come up with ignition coils that look completely different than the one that I have. So is it possible that the motor that I have is not a 1987 and maybe something earlier? The model number and serial number Tag was ripped in half and I only have the serial number of the boat motor. Does anybody have any other ideas as to how I can find out what year and model number of the boat motor could be?
I'd like to purchase a new fuel pump, fuel lines, ignition system, including the coil, distributor cap, resistor wire, plug wires and spark plugs.

I need some help from somebody to help me figure out what I'm missing. When I look up the parts for what I believe is a 1987 OMC sterndrive 3 liter I come up with the parts that don't match my motor. I am excited to be part of the iboat community and I look forward to getting some help and hopefully being able to help other people. I will come back and attach a link to Flickr for the pictures of my motor

Howdy Glenn,

Welcome aboard!

The engine will only for a few seconds on that fuel that you either squirt in or the accelerator pump quirts in!

If it runs at all, it's likley NOT ignition

I took a quick look at the fuel system and noticed that the fuel lines running from the fuel tank to the fuel pump (or fuel bowl containing the filter) were dry... The fuel bowl was also dry. I'm not quite sure exactly why they were dry but I figured that this had to been the reason
This is very likely the right diagnosis and you're on the right track!

Take a look at the following link http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engine-repair-and-maintenance/omc-i-o-inboard-engines-outdrives/480269-must-have-technical-information-for-diyers focus particularly on #8

What is your model number? You can't go by the year of the boat.

Will look something like this:
302APARY

That being said, unlikely there is much difference between the 1986 through 1988 engines/drives.
