omc stern drive

I am looking at a boat its a charger 1850 have no idea of the year. The omc stern drive lower unit either needs all the gears replaced or just a good used lower unit. The model number i can read i think its 983488 , serial number is J348687. Best i can tell online it maybe some sort of an 800 series not sure though. So can anyone help to identify the year of the boat and the omc stern drive so I can have the correct information to get either parts i need for a total lower unit overhaul or a good used stern drive lower unit.

OMC had three basic drive units. Electric shift models till 1977. Hydro-mechanical unit til 81/82. Full mechanical units until mid '85.

They all had distinctive external features. How about a picture of what you are dealing with. Maybe someone else can decipher the numbers you gave.

What year is the boat? Post a picture, that often helps in ID.
