OMC Sterndrive Hydraulics

I have a 1986 OMC Cobra, engine is 2.5 GM, Hydraulic pump is 0984355. The issue is this:

When I raise the drive up all is good. When I lower it and it gets to the bottom it blew the o-ring and broke the motor mount and oil flew about 15 feet. I have replaced the motor but am wondering if I should look at something else as the cause. Could it be a trim in relief valve issue? Does this system have an auto stop feature for when the drive is in the full up or down position? Any assistance or advice would be appreciated.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Is this a Stringer drive, that tilts the entire driveline,..??

No, it is not a stringer drive. It is a Cobra, first gen.
