OMC Sterndrive info

My first boat has been a 1968 OMC Sterndrive, 120hp inline 4cylinder. I've quickly learned that maintenance is going to cost me an arm and a leg if I don't learn to do some stuff myself! These old boats are easy to work on, but being more and more rare, it's going to get to the point where shops refuse to work on them.
I started a personal website that details all the maintenance adventures I'm having, as well as some of our outings. The website is http://www.thisoldboat.webs.com
Feel free to browse around and see what I've got!

Re: OMC Sterndrive info

Cool website, and a nice family you have there! Same story here pretty much, just bought my very first boat this week, Monday night, and expected to do a tune up and go boating, but turns out the motor or the stern drive is stuck. But we are pressing forward, I gave 800 bucks for it and when I called the guy and told him the motor was stuck, he said he would send half my money back if I wanted to keep it. So, why not? My trailer is a tandem axle with new tires and bearings and doesn't have any rust, so I figure I got this free boat with my trailer purchase! LOL! If you look at the top of this forum, you'll see an adults only thread, and that will take you to a link to be able to download an OMC repair/maintenance manual. Lots of info, and these things look pretty easy to work on after browsing through it. Have Fun!!!

Re: OMC Sterndrive info

Thanks for looking!! I just added a section under "maintenance" about how to change the impeller. Just changed mine for the first time last week, and I thought I'd share a step by step process with everybody else. No pictures yet, but they will be forthcoming!

Sweet! I love seeing other people's boat projects. Mine certainly has been an adventure (I'm hoping I have it all sorted out at this point - will find out next week when we're on vacation at the lake :)).

There's a thread I started that got stuck in the Adults Only section where I posted some pics of my impeller change. You might consider adding a link to your pics when you get them up there as well:

Your thread was most helpful. I found 2 pics that I took of the outdrive, and posted them on my "impeller change" page under "maintenance." Hopefully this info helps some other poor sucker out!

My cousin lives verrry close to you. Like yards or so not miles. I will be moving to Grass Valley area in a few years too. Really want to boat on Folsom.

I will be keeping up with your web site and maybe some day you can be my guide on Folsom.

Been to Loon Lake several times, used to run the Rubicon several times every summer. Got woke up by being thrown off a cliff in to the lake once. It's all good.

Folsom's a great place to boat, the marina has fuel and there are several really good ramps scattered around the lake. I like to go on Monday's, when the crowd is gone. On busy weekends there is a line at the pay station, and they only let one boat in when one comes out! No thanks!

There was a drowning at Folsom Lake last week...a sober reminder to be careful!
