A slight random ticking has always been heard coming from the intermediate housing area while at idle since I've had the boat. Can't hear it from outside of the boat. Most recently, the upper housing was rebuilt with new gear set. I realize just after reinstalling outdrive that I should have pulled and replaced the IH bearings and seals at the same time. Tick went away for a bit and then started up again. contributed it to the new gear set rolling torque being higher than the worn out gear set. The dog gears look fine, a bit worn but nothing to be a concerned about. Could this sound be an IH shaft bearing? The IH fill plug appeared to be full and no real issue when I've drained it in the past, but is the reservoir of the intermediate housing (rectangle plate with 6 screw) supposed to be full? Could there be something in the water passages that is bouncing around due to water cavitation to cause what sounds like a ball in a paint can when you shake it? Ticking seams to be reduced when rpm is increased, but still present.

This video really filtered out the engine noise and the ticking sound can be distinctly heard and it may be more rhythmic than I previously expected.

Welcome aboard rivets:

I'm racking my brain to come up with an idea, but I'm not coming up with anything. This is a little on the crazy side, but is there good water flow though the system? I'm wondering if it's a "gurgling" of the water flow. Otherwise, bearings are as good a guess as anything I've got.

Good water flow. I'll pick up an automotive stethoscope to try and pinpoint. I just need to listen for a non recurring ticking. Have to believe the ticking is resonating from elsewhere and is being amplified in the hollow intermediate housing.

Have you checked your lube for metal pieces? I'm wondering if maybe you have something bouncing around in the gear case somewhere?

No metal. But after much looking and listening to auto engine noises on you tube, a very similar sound is coming from bell housing related to a loose or broke flywheel. Anyone have experience with loose shaft adapter / flywheel?
