OMC Stringer Clutch..... use a Transom Saver?

Have an '82 Celebrity with Stringer 800. Just had to buy new clutch for the tilt mechanism.

The way this is setup, if you are cruising along, and hit something, the clutches will give, letting the outdrive come up, and not rip out the back of your boat. .. But when trailering, this clutch is also the only thing holding the outdrive from dragging the ground.

While in the water last outing, the clutch pack gave out, i had to tie up the outdrive with a rope to get it home.

....With all the bouncing, I could see eventually it would be possible for the clutches to let loose and let the outdrive drop while driving.

Has anyone ever used a transom saver to hold up the lower unit, like is used on outboards?

I don't know about saving your clutch but I am convinced that supporting the out drive will help the problem of the lift unit getting water inside. The constant down force on that little gear/shaft distorts the seal and allows water to enter the clutch area. If you do not keep your boat in the water I think a transom saver would be a good idea.
I own a '83 Stringer 400 unit and equipped the trailor with a transom saver but since the boat stays in the water during the summer it doesn't help.
