OMC Stringer Electric Problem

I have 2 1977, 175hp stringers on my boat. I was out on a test run after some maintainence. I had my engines at about 3500 RPM and my port engine went out of gear. It has neither forward or reverse gears, only neutral. When it came out of gear we didn't hear any mechanical breaking noises. It seemed electrical. I know that a major problem is the magnets going out, but what are the chances of both going out at the same time?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Check for voltage at the blue and green wires that go into the drive at the intermediate housing. if you have voltage there when in gear,( 1 wire should have 12v in fwd the other 12 v in rev) then you probably have either bad upper gears, sheared drive shaft or worn water pump shaft splines. but just a guess. goodluck, Bill. ps forgot about worn ball gears. Did it overheat?

also check lower unit gear oil for contamination. Water in the lube will conduct electricity.
Type C (high electrical resistance) lube only in those lowers, btw.
