I currently have an 85 Galaxie with the 120 V4 engine and the OMC Stringer 400. During the last outing it began to "Clunk" like we hit a tree randomly. RPMs stayed constant when it happens so we lifted the engine cover and could see the engine jerk when it happens, almost like the prop momentarily disengages. Once we where at home I noticed a leak on the lower unit and found a hairline crack. I intend to replace the entire lower unit but want to ensure that I am getting to correct unit. Is the unit a Hyro-Mechanical or just a straight mechanical? I'm hoping that I can get a few more seasons out of the turd with this change out.

1985 should be straight mechanical. BUT ... on your engine there should be a tag that reads something like 252STHRCOM 1985.

You can also post a couple of photos. Some of us can eye-ball the drives (Not sure I can tell the diff between the hydro and the full mechanical)

Welcome aboard.

1982-1985 are straight mechanical

they were painted silver (vs the prior white and creme)

Yeah the unit is silver.....thanks for the info.. Also any opinions on replacing only the lower unit vs a full upper and lower replacement? Rebuilt vs used? I've read the sales pitch on why to do both.......

If the upper is still good and you are not having any heating problems just replace the lower.
When you get the replacement be sure that the shift cable is not cracked and is easy to pull the wires in both directions.

Rebuilt lower bought, any tricks to getting the shift cable cap off the old unit, cable is still good so no need to replace, seems to be hooked on the rack. I'm sure it's been discussed before in the forum but the correct search string eludes me.
