Need a little help figuring out how to change the oil in my intermediate housing on my OMC stringer 400. This is a 1985 and I have a filler hole on top, and a bottom plug. When I open both nothing comes out. When I try putting oil in top, oil will not go in. When I try putting oil in bottom it will not take.
PLEASE HELP????
Thanks

Re: OMC Stringer Intermediate Housing Service

does your fill plug have a dipstick on it? I have a '75 electric shift intermediate housing with a '80 800 hydro-mech outdrive on it. my earlier IH does not have a drain plug but it has a marked dipstick attached to the fill plug. It does not take very much oil. It just has to lubricate the tapered roller bearing on the drive shaft.

this probably does not help you much but do not overfill it. if you have both plugs out and nothing runs out, I'd have to assume it is empty.

are you sure your not working on tilt box?
intermediate has one large plug on top and a smaller (normal) drain in beside ball gear shaft.
the drain on yor intermediate should be on starboard side

Marinemech 1
Intermediate housing is located right in front of the upper housing. The plug is right in the center just to the left of the center of the housing. The other plug is on the bottom on the right side. None of the plugs have a dipstick.

Re: OMC Stringer Intermediate Housing Service

I spoke in error BNTSTER. My IH fill plug does not have a dipstick. I was thinking about the upper outdrive. When I remove the IH fill plug, the fluid leve is right up to the opening.

I would do as marinemech suggested and try the compressed air from both ends, with the plugs out.
