Re: omc stringer outdrive oil change..please help..
I'm trying to change to oil in my stringer outdrive but i don't have a clue where to start. Ive ordered a manual but it hasn't got here yet. Was wondering if yall could give me a little advise on how much and where to drain/fill the drive with what kind of oil.
I attached a pic of the outdrive. Is this an 800??
Does your boat have a v8? If it does it is probley a 800 series. If you are looking to only drian the upper and lower it is easy. Start at the lower there will be one drain plug all the way at the bottom pull that one. Second there is one mid way up the middle at the top of the lower part of the drive pull that one and the fluid will come out of the lower drain plug.
The top is the same there will be one plug at the lower portion of the upper. Pull that plug. Then go to the top of the drive and remove the oil level dip stick and the oil will come out the bottom. To get all the oil out of the top you will need to get a vacum pump because the upper drain is not all the way at the bottom. That is how I do mine to get it all out.
Then you will haft to get a pump to pump the oil in the out drive.
On the bottom you start by inserting the pump threaded end of the hose into the lowest drain hole. With the drive down and level pump the fluid in until you see start to come out the upper hole of the lower. Then put your upper drain plug in the lower unit back in. Then remove the pump and replace the lower drain plug in the lower unit with new o ring and the bottom is done.
Same goes for the upper fill from bottom but you will need to check the dip stick as you fill so you don't over fill.
Remember to use new o ring's when you do this it's not worth a drive full of water for two dollers worth of o ring's.
The drains should be on the right looking at the back of the boat.
For oil I buy 64 ounce's of hpo synthetic gear lube from my local discount marine shop. Some people can find it at wally world. I have used this for years and 800 hours later my 85 stringer out drive has yet to give me a problem knock on wood. You should be doing this every season as I do. You haft to take care of these old drives, parts are getting far and few between.
