OMC Stringer Outdrive won't engage

I unfortunately ran the outdrive into a sandy bottom. No apparent damage. Continued to use the boat. It seemed to be fine. A week later while out in the boat, again everything seemed to be fine. After raising anchor and heading for home, after about five minutes the outdrive no longer had power. The engine was still running, but couldn't get the outdrive to engage. Any advice on how to check for the cause of the problem. Electrical? Internal outdrive problem? Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this one would be greatly appreciated...... where do I start?

start with year and model of drive. "Stringer" doesn't give us a complete picture.

Could have spun a prop hub.

But the one universal stringer question is:
Did the engine start overheating?

I agree with Howard. If the engine sounds right when giving it gas but the boat doesn't want to move or moves only a little, it's likely a spun propeller.
