I've been lurking on these forums for a few days, and can't say thanks enough for all of the valuable insight many of you provide. It's been very helpful!
I just took a plunge into a project boat because I was willing to risk the purchase price. It's a 1972 Silverline Comoro in fantastic condition. The hitch is the stern drive - or as I've seen it described on the boards, the "White Boat Anchor." The boat itself is in fantastic (even amazing) condition, and the inline 6 is silky smooth (runs with no problem, and is not leaking a drip of oil). But the stern drive is jamming when you shift into gear. It doesn't grind at all, but you do hear a little bit of a slam. There's just a quick shudder of the outdrive, and the engine shuts off.
It's a 165HP, but I can't locate the model number. I think there were two possibles on that year boat, but don't know how much that matters until I get into parts. I know it's electric shift, and that it was working a few weeks ago.
Any suggestions as to what to look at first?
I'm new to stern drives, and don't completely understand how the out drive works. But I have ripped into an outboard or two, so I've got the general idea. I've also ordered a shop manual, and won't start anything until I get it here at the house.
Any ideas would be a huge help.
