I have a 1983 20' Wellscraft with a 800 stringer that I am swapping over to a mercruiser and was wondering if the OMC steering assembly will work with the mercruiser setup?

Re: OMC Stringer Swap to Mercruiser Steering Question

Howdy,

I'm surprised that someone hasn't jumped on this one!

I can say categorically that the steering for a Cobra will work with a Mercruiser.

I cannot say for a Stringer but you could go to the Teleflex Morse or any marine parts site and look up steering cables. If the same model number cable is used for many models, the it will probably work.

If original cable is as old as the boat, you might consider replacing the steering wheel/quadrant and cable anyway...... they're not all that expensive.

Here's an example from iBoats,

and another one from Wholesale Marine....

Ayuh,... If it's the old Tru-course steering from OMC,... No, it's Totally different...
As noted by Rick,..
Updating with a new helm,+ cable is probably the cheapest, Best way out for you...

when you begin to remove the old drive components, you would see the two steering systems bear zero resemblance to each other.

You will have to replace the complete steering system right up to the helm and even the steering wheel will have to be changed.

But again, for a more than 25 year old boat, it's probably worth it to replace the whole mess......
