What a great site? Glad I found it. Having problems with the tilt on an OMC 800. The outdrive will only lift several inches before requiring manual assistance. In attempting to toggle the tilt switch to raise the outdrive further, I end up shearing the tilt motor shaft. I have replaced 2 already. Could galling (H20 corrosion)on the worm gear be part of the problem? I've read several suggestions to clean the clutch plates as well. Am I incorrect in assuming that the clutch has nothing to do with the outdrive raising and lowering? My belief was that the clutch only provided lower unit protection in case a submerged object was encountered.

Re: OMC Stringer Tilt

Rlong
I agree the clutch is to protect the outdrive. One thing it could be is the pivot for the outdrive have old hard greese or no greese. Mine was like yours where I would hit the switch and it would move up 4 inches and stop. I would hit it again for another 3 inches. I greased the zerts every year but no grease got to the back side of the pivots.

I pulled the caps off the pivots and pulled outdrive away Cleaned all the old greese out put in some new all the way around and now it raises all the way in a count of three. Do make sure you have motor oil in clutch not water.

A easy way to check if outdrive is hard to raise is to remove the 3 bolts that hold the big gear and take it off. Now you can raise and lower by hand to check for stiffness or binds. Let us know how you make out.
