What a great site? Glad I found it. Having problems with the tilt on an OMC 800. The outdrive will only lift several inches before requiring manual assistance. In attempting to toggle the tilt switch to raise the outdrive further, I end up shearing the tilt motor shaft. I have replaced 2 already. Could galling (H20 corrosion)on the worm gear be part of the problem? I've read several suggestions to clean the clutch plates as well. Am I incorrect in assuming that the clutch has nothing to do with the outdrive raising and lowering? My belief was that the clutch only provided lower unit protection in case a submerged object was encountered.

Re: OMC Stringer Tilt

I was just wondering if you ever got a reply on this? I have had the exact problem and have also been told the clutch had nothing to do with the tilt.

Thanks.

RRitt is an expert on these hydraulics, so you may want to send him a PM.
