I have a 1979 pursuit with an 800 stringer outdrive. The trim is no longer functioning. My question is, can I abandon this trim system (poor at best) and have trim tabs or smartabs installed instead and will this do away with my problem? This is my first post but read this great forum often. Thanks.

Putting tabs on will help get the boat on plane but you will not be able to "trim" the boat once you are on plane. The boat will plow through the water giving you a rough wet ride. You will also not get full top speed and will be less fuel-efficent.

Welcome aboard. You have the trim where the motor goes up and down??

Is it stuck in the center or what??

Yes Chief, thats the one I have, worm gear and jack screw. Don't know exactly where it quit and will have to wait till the white stuff is off the cover.
I haven't been able to check anything ie: connections, solenoids, fuse or motor. But wanted to know if I had any other options in case repairing the trim exceeded my limited mechanical ability. This senior don't bend as easily as he used to. Thanks for your help.

Ayuh,... Hi Bill, Welcome Aboard....

The drive Trim,+ Trim Tabs do 2 opposite things,...

The Only way you Could make it work, would be locking the drive, Mostly trimmed Up,...
To work against the Trim Tabs, trying to lower the bow....

With the drive trim Down,+ Trim Tabs,.. As noted above, You'll be Plowing,... Badly...

This can work quite well. I have experimented a little by using my trim tabs only while keeping the drive at it's best high speed setting. Very effective with the only problen being that it is pretty wet at the stern when the tabs are down and the drive is in that fixed position. If I were you, I would find the best postion for the drive for cruise and/or top speed, fix it there and then use the tabs. Oh, and I would do this after I installed the tabs as they might change that point slightly.

Yea i know what you have and i could have it for free off 2 different motors and i don't want it, but thats me, you already have it and should not be overly difficult to fix. Problem is, as i see it, it's low in the bilge and got to mess up with water always over it.

Maybe just maybe it's a connection that just rusted off the end.

When the snow comes off, and you get a chance to get into there, look to the wires first, and then if it's not a quick fix take a pic and post again if you can't get it to work, i'll walk you thru it.

Together we WILL get it to work again.

Good luck !

Selectrim is very handy for things like changing the engine oil filter, or adjusting shift cables....being able to tip the engine angle is a real bonus on some hulls
