Omc stuck in reverse

I have an 89 bayliner Ciera with and Omc 5.8 and an SEI lower unit conversion, so shifting issues aren't exactly a new subject. however last fall at lay up time I had my dealer put in a new shift cable to the lower unit. that seemed to help one issue, however, we just launched yesterday and now it gets struck in reverse, and wont come out unless i kill the engine. the dealer also did a tuneup, and I noticed it seems to be ideling to fast ( the tach says 1000 rpm's ) it also does go into gear with quite a thud, didn't use to. So I'm wondering if the idle speed has anything to do with this, and how tough is it to slow down the idle if so ?

Sounds like the cable is not adjusted right. If its not adjusted right then it will not activate the interrupter switch and will not stumble the engine unless you turn the engine off.

With the boat in the water see if you can hear the engine stumble when you try to pull it out of gear.

Your gonna need an OEM service manual so you can adjust the cable. Depending on what they did / didnt do you might have to take the drive off and adjust it at the transom housing.

Get the rpm down to 550-600 if you can. There will be a screw on the carb body near the throttle linkage. Adjust using that screw. With the idle that high the shift assist wont activate. This should fix the problem.

One more thing, you may need to adjust the throttle control cable. It can cause high idle also. You would do that where it is held on the bracket.

You still have a functioning ESA? You need that to get out of gear.

ESA, is that the shift assist modual i assume, if so then yes, that's something else it's been suggested I need to check, thanks. so does the esa only effect coming out of reverse ?

It is only used for coming out of gear...forward or reverse. You can test it my manually operating the switch.

You still have a points ignition right?

Operate the switch with the roller that is touching the "W" shaped cam. Engine should stumble.
