I just got a 1984 conroy with a omc 800 stinger,this boat has a new gm 3.0 4 cly motor in it the out drive is bad, so I was given a 1979 tbird formula with a 800 that is good, but it has a v8 gmc . is it going to fit on the conroy it looks the same. any help well taken thanks

They have different gearing in the upper and lower. They are not compatible. The good news is that if your 800 series drive is in good shape, you can sell it on Ebay for a good amount of money. They are worth way more than the 400 series Stringer drives. You can find replacement 400 series Stringer drives on Ebay all day long for half the price the 800 series go for.

Is the upper gear case or lower gear case on the Conroy bad?

I thought the gearing was different in the upper gear case (one of the guru's may need to answer that), but the same in the lower. In other words, the lower unit from the Formula might work with the upper gear case of the Conroy.

Ayuh,.... They're Not both 800 drives,...

the I4 motor turns a Stringer 400 drive,...

+ gearing matches HP.
pretend your car has to be stuck in 1 gear the way a boat is.
If you have 4000 lb car with a 140HP 4 cyl engine you probably want to be stuck in 2nd so you can get around.
Same car with a 260HP V8, you want to be stuck in 3rd.
