I recently inherited an OMC 3 gallon tank through my latest motor acquisition. The motor I bought was a 68 Johnson 6hp, however, I doubt this was the original tank. The tank is labeled OMC (not Johnson) and my seat of the pants guess is that it is from the 70's or early 80's.
Anyway... this particular tank uses a different vent mechanism than the common OMC type that is built into the tank/hose connector and activates when the fuel connector is clipped in. This tank has a separate plastic vent mechanism that screws into the tank separte from the fuel connector.
After filling this tank for the first time and driving home from the station, there was a little gas dripping from the vent. So... how does this vent work? Does it need to be screwed in when not in service an loosened during operation perhaps? Does it possibly have some sort of internal vacumm/pressure relief valve? Should it leak a little fuel if splashed around? Does it sound like mine needs replacement?
