OMC throttle/shifter repair

According to the Clymer's manual instructions, I separated the halves of my 1995 OMC throttle/shifter housing to tighten the fast idle lever which had worked loose. Once completed, I then "mated" the two halves together, lifting the fast idle lever slightly as the manual suggests. The two halves seem to come together correctly, but the fast idle lever is now in the up postion, will not move, & the throttle/shifter lever will not move. Both the throttle & shifter cables work fine with the halves separated, but nothing will move once the two halves have been joined. Any suggestions? Thanks.

When you assembled it, did you have the shift lever in the Neutral Position? Also, did you remove either cable when you repaired it? I have had mine apart a few times, and have never had this problem. I was looking through my OMC manual and cannot find anything unusual!

Also, My Manual says to leave the Fast Idle lever at the Idle Postion when putting the 2 halves together.

Re: OMC throttle/shifter repair

I did not remove the cables. I may have moved the throttle cable slightly by accident while the halves were separated, but I moved it back so the engine is in neutral. The arrow on the large throttle gear is depressing the plunger on the switch, which I believe completes a circuit to allow the engine to start. There's a male plastic post on the starboard housing half that's connected to the fast idle lever. This mates to the smaller gear (directly connected to the shift cable) on the port housing half. It seems as though that's stopping everything from turning. Worked fine before I messed with it. Any other suggestions. Thanks.

When you try to assembly the halves, push the shift lever toward FORWARD and see if it meshes!

Thanks for the advice & pics. I believe everything is positioned as in the pics. I'll try again tonight.

Re: OMC throttle/shifter repair

Thanks to all... especially "rickdb1boat" for your assistance. The pics were very helpful. Got home last night & found that I needed to push the throttle cable lever completely forward & then mate the two halves. Disconnected the cable from the engine, slid the lever on the starboard-half throttle housing completely forward, & the two halves mated perfectly. Then just re-adjusted cable at the engine. Works Great! Thank You!
